Hanggang Pang Indie Film Na Lang Ba Si Nora?

by:  Alden I Bula

Sa isang FB page dedicated to Nora Aunor, I read this question (sort of) bakit walang o hindi gumawa ng movie si Ate Guy sa Viva Films or Star Cinema.  As an objective Nora fan, nag muni muni muna ako bago mag react.  Kasi there are realities involved na medyo masakit isipin, damhin, at basahin with regard to this idea.  Bago simulan ang discussion, let me go back sa aking armada of knowledge with regard to Nora Aunor. Nora Aunor 1

Hep, sige isipin ninyo ang comment ni Kuh Ledesma when she was lambasted in the movie “Tinimbang Ang Langit” that Nora was not a best actress in her first movie.  Indeed, she was’nt and she was humble enough to be mesmerized that she landed a movie contract with Sampaguita Pictures.
  2. It took Tower Productions a casino attitude, meaning to gamble on her.  And, the Pinoy movie industry was never the same again.  As they say, it was really a mystery why a mala negrita na babae could command that kind of following.  OO, kinontrata siya ni Dr. Jose Vera Peraz, but just like the Star Cinema and Viva Films (although Viva produced Beloved, Tinik Sa Dibdib, Flor Contemplacion Story, Muling Umawit ang Puso, Bakit May Kahapon Pa, and Sidhi) of today, hindi sila sumugal.
  3. Nagkaroon ng demandahan, pero it was never known somehow sino panalo.  What happened was a compromise.  From thereon, lahat ng mga producers gusto makinabang sa popularity ni Ate Guy, kaya nga kahit si Dorothy Laforteza (nanay ni Sunshine Dizon) nag produce ng pelikula for Ate Guy (fortunately, kumita nag mga movie under her.)
  4. Bago nauso ang indie film, si Ate Guy was already considered as indie pioneer.  It came to point in time that movie royalties in the sixties and seventies have to produce their own film in order to cater to their own whims.  Thus, you have FPJ Productions, JPE Films, Rosas Productions, AM Films, and even her rival had VS Films.  May indie films na noon pa.  Take note, Susan Roces won best actress awards sa mga pelikulang she produced, Amalia also produced “Ibulong Mo Sa Hangin” and she won the same award.  Dolphy won some best actor trophies under RVQ productions.
  5. Vilma won best picture trophies dahil sa “Pagputi ng Uwak Pag Itim ng Tagak” but Nora had the edge she produced “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos” and even took the edge further when she financed “Bona.”.  In other words, the usual film companies were only in for the money and these two ladies knew that if they want to make a mark in the history of Philippine movies they have to do it on their own.  Fortunately, Nora was willing to be poor just to have that movie which could affirm her artistic supremacy.
  6. Kanya kanyang niche lang iyan.  Nora was the first box office queen, and even won several time Queen of Philippine Movies sponsored by Bamci Promotions.
  7. During those times na pilit binubura nga mga anti-Nora si Ate Guy, she made it sure na hindi siya mabubura.  This is by appearing in quality films like Himala, produced Condemned, appeared in Merika, at tinanggap ang Bulaklak sa City Jail.  Kaya noong 1985, Noranians, believed that she was robbed off the box office queen award.
The same award naipanalo din Vilma. At this time, hindi pa tapos ang first semester ng 2014, me limang kaabang kaabang na pelikula si Nora in terms of prestige and I believe, isang dosenang awards ang hahakutin nito mapa local man o mapa international.

With these ideas, kailangan pa ba I explain bakit pang indie na lang si Ate Guy.

And the last reason, talagang, box office poison si Nora sa mga commercial film producers.  Kasi nga pera ang motive.  I could not blame them, kailangan the movie has to earn 3x sa budget in order to recover.  Kasi nga me 30 percent tax pa involve, at me recreation tax pa na 30 percent.  I salute Mother Lily, kasi nga kahit perceived gahaman sa pera, pero siya rin nag produce ng Manila By Night, Sister Stella L, Ito Ba Ang Ating Mga Anak, Hinugot Sa Langit, Bilangin Ang Bituin Sa Langit, at iba pang makabuluhan na movies.

Need we say more bakit pang indie lang.  Sabi nga ni Vilma, she will prove na kumikita din ang indie.  She failed.  And I still believe, Nora will do it.  Padre de Familia will do it.  At sasabihin nila dahil kay Coco Martin.  Please, wala pang movie si Coco that reached P100M.  My take is that it will earn P200M.  As a Noranian, ok na sa akin for the meantime na pang indie siya.  Remember, pakanta pakanta lang sya but look what happened.
